The LaSallian 2015 Year-Ender Special

I remember spending most of my early mornings as an art & graphics newbie at my former student publication reading through our archives. Something about those dusty old issues had always fascinated me, and when I found myself a few years later as the publication's editor in chief, I wanted to do something that would celebrate the history of both my university and the student publication I had grown to love.

That was the year we made the year-ender special to close out 2015. For the cover, I wanted to use photographs of the school's oldest and newest buildings — the St. La Salle Hall and Henry Sy Sr. Hall, respectively — photographed by my colleague, Sean Joya. The content itself was derived from the headlines that defined each decade, researched and annotated by the writing staff.

Here's what the final magazine looked like!

The images used were a combination of photos from the archive and photos of actual copies of our old newspapers. I asked our art staff to digitally draw over the photographs to depict changes that have happened since the archive photos were taken, and I'm really happy with everything that they came up with.

My web team also came up with an online special for those who couldn't get physical copies of the special, especially the loyal alumni who have lived through the eras we explored in the issue. Overall, my team enjoyed going through the fascinating history of the school, and tracing the headlines that defined the last five and a half decades from the writers, artists, and photographers that came before us.
